We started our Drop Everything and Read sessions on Friday, last week. We are hoping to build the habit of reading for pleasure and making reading an essential part of our day. We really enjoyed choosing our books and sitting in different places to read them. We also enjoyed sharing our book recommendations with each other. We are developing a book corner where we can put these for people to see.

Year 1

Last week, our Year 1 children enjoyed a very special visit to All Saints’ Church, in Hatton, to help them understand why Christmas is such an important celebration for Christians. The visit brought our RE learning to life and gave the children a chance to explore the Christmas story in a hands-on and meaningful way.

The children moved around a series of interactive stations, each one helping them to learn more about the Nativity story and its message.

At ‘The Journey’ station, the children used wooden characters to re-enact Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem. This helped them to think carefully about what the journey might have been like and to retell the story in their own words.

At ‘The Message’ station, the children reflected on the message of peace that Christmas brings to Christians. They thought about who they would like to send a message of peace to this Christmas time and why kindness and peace are important values to share.

Next, at ‘The Preparation’ station, the children explored how people prepare for Christmas, where each child made a pinecone decoration to add to the large advent wreath.

At the next station, the children learned about the gifts brought by the three kings. They had the opportunity to draw a picture of a gift they might give to a baby, thinking carefully about what would be thoughtful and kind, before folding this inside a special gift box.

We then gathered together at the final station ‘The Gift’ where there was a baby in a manger. Vickie explained to us that Christians believe that Jesus was a gift from God. The children then placed their ‘gifts’ (the pictures they had drawn inside special gift boxes), around the manger.

The visit was a wonderful opportunity for the children to ask questions, explore the church environment and deepen their understanding of the Christmas story. They represented the school brilliantly and showed great curiosity, respect and enthusiasm throughout the morning.

We would like to thank the volunteers at All Saints’ Church for welcoming us to share a wonderful morning and for helping to make our learning so memorable.

Reception

This term has been a wonderfully busy and exciting one for our class and we are incredibly proud of everything the children have achieved. A real highlight was their first ever nativity performance. The children worked extremely hard in the lead up to the show and it truly paid off. They were fantastic on stage, showing great confidence and enthusiasm while singing all of the songs so beautifully. It was a very special moment for everyone and a performance to be proud of.

We also enjoyed another important milestone this term with the children taking part in their first ever school trip. We visited The National Adventure Farm where we had an amazing day full of memorable experiences. The children explored the outdoor areas, visited the animals and even had the opportunity to stroke them. We then hopped onto the train and were transported to the North Pole where we met the elves and visited Santa. It was a magical experience and the children were a credit to the school throughout the trip. We all had a fantastic time and it was wonderful to see the children learning, exploring and enjoying new experiences together.

Year 1

Year 1 have worked really hard this half term, getting stuck into learning across all areas of the curriculum.
The children have particularly enjoyed our instruction writing unit, where we have been identifying verbs and using these to write simple sentences with finger spaces and full stops. We followed and wrote instructions to make rice crispie cakes and, of course, we needed to taste-test them too!

In art, the children have been exploring different types of lines and shapes. We have been identifying and creating regular 2D shapes as well as organic shapes. We have been inspired by the work of Paul Klee and have used his style of combining and colouring shapes to create some fantastic artwork of our own. We identified shapes which we could use to represent our facial features. We have looked at different ways to hold our pencil for drawing, writing and colouring and have explored pressure and the way that this can change the way our artwork looks.

Reception

What a wonderful start to the term we’ve had in Reception! The children have returned to school full of enthusiasm and ready to learn. They have impressed all the adults with their kindness, helpfulness, and positive attitudes. It has been a pleasure to see them settle back into school life so confidently.

In phonics, the children have been building on the great progress they made last term. They are learning to apply their sounds to segment and blend when reading CVC words. This week, they have been practising using their phoneme fingers and have even begun to spell CVC words independently.

Our topic this week has explored the question â€˜How do we celebrate Bonfire Night?’ We began the week with our very own Bonfire Night celebration, where the children enjoyed watching fireworks and listening to a story. They then made tasty ‘firework sparklers,’ which were enjoyed with a warm cup of hot chocolate while watching another dazzling firework display. Well done, Wrens!

Nurture group

Our Nurture Group has had a wonderful term, filled with fun, learning, and lots of smiles! The children have really enjoyed taking part in the sessions each week, building their confidence, developing friendships, and practising important social and emotional skills through games, stories, and creative activities. It has been lovely to see how proud they are of their progress and how much they look forward to their nurture time. Today was especially special as the children were so excited to invite their parents in for tea! They took great pride in helping to prepare and serve the refreshments, sharing their favourite activities, and showing how much they have achieved. Thank you to all the families who joined us—it was a joyful celebration of the children’s hard work and growth.

Year 2

Year 2 have been working hard in writing, getting to know everything we can about cheetahs. We are working towards writing a non- chronological report at the end of term. The children enjoyed a lesson creating big mind maps full of adjectives to describe cheetahs. We also gathered a collection of verbs to use in our writing.

Year 3

What a fantastic start to the term we’ve had in Year 3! Everyone has settled in beautifully and shown great enthusiasm for learning. It’s been wonderful to see how confident, kind, and curious the children have become already.
Our science topic this half term has been all about movement and nutrition. We’ve been learning how our bodies work and what keeps us healthy and strong. The children loved exploring how our skeleton helps us move, and they even made their own moving skeletons and hands!
We’ve also learnt about the different food groups and how to make a balanced diet. Year 3 can now tell you which foods help us grow, which give us energy, and which help our muscles to repair.
In history, we’ve travelled back in time to the Stone Age. The class has been fascinated by how people lived, hunted, and made tools thousands of years ago. They’ve discovered some incredible facts.
We had a wonderful time joining forces with Reception to celebrate National Poetry Day. Year 3 children worked so kindly and patiently with their younger buddies to share poems, create models of objects found in the poem, and perform verses together. It was a lovely way to share creativity across the school!

This week, Year 6 have been diving into two fascinating areas of learning across history and science.

In history, we have been learning about the Battle of Britain by listening to powerful oral recounts from ex-RAF serviceman. Their stories and experiences sparked some very thoughtful discussion.

In Science, we've been developing our understanding of how living things are classified.  We have learnt that vertebrates can be classified into 5 different groups and have researched the cold-blooded vertebrate groups: reptiles, amphibians and fish.

As always, we’re proud of how engaged and curious the pupils have been in their learning.
