At Heath Fields Primary School, we are proud to be part of the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) programme—a nationally recognised initiative that transforms playtimes into exciting, inclusive, and enriching experiences for every child.
OPAL Play is all about making the most of outdoor play. It encourages children to be creative, active, and independent during their break times, using a wide variety of materials and spaces to explore, build, imagine, and have fun!
Instead of traditional playground equipment alone, OPAL introduces open-ended resources like:
- Tyres, crates, and planks for building
- Dressing-up clothes for imaginative play
- Mud kitchens and water play areas
- Natural spaces for exploring and relaxing
Children are given the freedom to choose how they play, which helps them develop important life skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, resilience, and communication.
Lunchtimes are now more than just a break—they’re a vital part of the school day where children:
- Stay active and healthy through physical play
- Build friendships across year groups
- Express themselves creatively and confidently
- Feel happier and more engaged when they return to class
Our staff are trained to support safe, inclusive play while giving children the space to lead their own adventures.
“I love building dens with my friends!”
“There’s always something new to try!”
“It’s the best part of the day!”
By embracing OPAL Play, we’re creating a school environment where every child can thrive, not just in the classroom, but in the playground too.
